April Fool's and Interfering Brassieres

Tomorrow is April Fool's Day, and I found the Top 100 April Fool's Hoaxes of All Time! Here are a few of my favorites.

#15: The Case of the Interfering Brassieres. In 1982 the Daily Mail reported that a local manufacturer had sold 10,000 "rogue bras" that were causing a unique and unprecedented problem, not to the wearers but to the public at large. Apparently the support wire in these bras had been made out of a kind of copper originally designed for use in fire alarms. When this copper came into contact with nylon and body heat, it produced static electricity which, in turn, was interfering with local television and radio broadcasts. The chief engineer of British Telecom, upon reading the article, immediately ordered that all his female laboratory employees disclose what type of bra they were wearing. HA!

#42: Don’t Disturb the Squirrels. In 1993 Westdeutsche Rundfunk, a
German radio station, announced that officials in Cologne had just passed an unusual new city regulation. Joggers going through the park would be required to pace themselves to go no faster than six mph. Any faster, it was felt, would unnecessarily disturb the squirrels who were in the middle of their mating season.

MY FAVORITE HOAX EVER: Over 200 Improv Everywhere Agents froze in place at the exact same time in Grand Central Station. Commuters and tourists slowed down to notice what was going on.

Do you have a memorable April Fool's Day prank in which you were either the actor or the victim? Share it with me by adding a comment. I can't wait to find out what pranks are pulled this year!

Corsets, Corsets, Corsets!

You voted, and corsets are by far your favorite type of lingerie. And rightly so! Nothing quite shows off your curves (and gives you a knife-free tummy tuck) quite like a corset. But corsets aren't just for the boudoir or wearing under your clothes. They look great with a skinny pair of jeans or a skirt for a night out on the town.

Just take a look at this Ariel Inset Corset. Satin and Lace inserts and strategically placed boning make this a stylish, forgiving corset. With reinforced straps, hidden hook-n-eye front and lace-up back, you are sure to look trim and feel great. It looks stunning with a pair of dark jeans.

Another great choice is this Celine Sequin Lace Corset paired with a satin skirt. It is made of elagant floral lace and lycra. Gentle boning and shimmering lace-up front are paired with the comfort-adding lacey zipper back.
This Charmaine Detailed Corset is sure to turn heads with its bright color and It has a colorful embroidered Silky brocade with applique trim to accentuate the bust. Soft boning all around with petite hook-n-eye front closure and lace-up back will give you a beautiful hourglass shape. This corset is versatile, looking great worn with jeans, black pants or a flowing black skirt.

5 Secrets of Happy People

Today I read a great article called "The 5 Secrets of Happy People". Here's how you can shake off those winter blues and radiate beauty from the inside out!

1) Happy people find their most golden self. In other words, they strive toward excellence based on their unique talents and potential. This is referred to as eudaimonia, and it's beneficial for the body as well as the mind. In a study led by Carol Ryff, PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, women were assessed with psychological tests for eudaimonia . The results revealed that those with high scores weighed less, slept better, and had fewer stress hormones and indications of heart disease than others.

2) They design their lives to bring in joy. Analyze your life; decide what you really want to spend time on, and what you can do without. Take control! Even an hour transferred each day from an activity you hate to one you like can improve your happiness!

3) They avoid "if only" fantasies. We don't really know what will make us happy, and we tend to focus on a single aspect of our lives when assessing our happiness. Happy people also know to keep adding novel experiences to their lives to avoid monotony. Try a romantic gift or costume to help keep monotony out of your lovelife.

4) They put best friends first. We already know that friendship makes us happy. The news is that the nature of the relationship counts. You get more joy from spending time with a close friend than you do from spending bits of time with acquaintances. This doesn't mean you have to sit down and have serious discussions everytime; simple companionship, such as hitting the mall or having a girl's movie night, is the key. Spend some quality time shopping at Lingerie Diva with your friend to find some fun and flirty lingerie, jewelry and shoes.

5) They allow themselves to be happy. Finally, you have to be receptive to happiness. Don't feel guilty if you're having fun. Instead of always putting others' needs in front of your own, try to find a compromise. Happy people tend to be more helpful to others, so it won't do much good to try to lift someone else up when you yourself feel unhappy. If you still feel like putting others before yourself, know this: Happy people live 7 to 10 years longer than unhappy people, so they're around longer to make the world a better place.

How To Dress For Your Shape

Women are bombarded with images of "perfect" bodies that are largely unrealistic. In the lingerie industry, female models appear to have a perfect “hourglass” figure. But in reality, women come in all shapes and sizes. Even models may not be naturally the shape they appear thanks to enhancements, surgery, and photo alterations.

But our shape is what makes each and every woman unique and beautiful, and there are ways to work with what we've got. Take this quiz to find out what your body type is, then read below and see what products Lingerie Diva has that will complement your shape.

TYPE 1: Pear
This is the most common shape among women. Broaden your shoulders with wide neck lines, bring attention to your waist, and wear dark colors on the bottom to play it down and help you look more proportionate.

~ The Chiffon 3-Quarter Sleeved Top With Skirt & G-string is great because it has a wide neck line and the skirt over the g-string helps downplay the bottom half of your body.

~ Add the Chiffon Underwire Bra & Panty to your wardrobe to enhance your top half.

~ I love the Charmaine Detailed Corset, as the bright color and pattern will accentuate your waist.

TYPE 2: Apple
Emphasize your chest, hips and legs to elongate the appearance of your frame. Wear darker colors on top and lighter colors on bottom to balance the upper body.
~ High Platforms and High Heels will lengthen your figure.

~ This Satin Corset will provide good support while emphasizing your lower half.
~ Wear this Satin Halter Dress to enhance your bust, slim your waist and lower half, and show off your banging legs.

TYPE 3: Rectangle
Since you have great legs and arms, you want to show them off! Avoid loose garments that hide your figure.

~ Padded bras with underwire will give you some extra oomph where you need it. I like the Polka Dot Bra Set.

~ To accentuate your waist, try the
Sexy Rhinestone Belt or the Rhinestone Neck to Belly Chain.

~ Try the
Sheer Mesh Camisole & Low Rise Panty! The asymmetrical top will emphasize your bust and show off your beautiful arms.

TYPE 4: Hourglass
You're very curvy with a clearly defined waist. If you were to gain weight, it would distribute evenly right to your curves. Most things look great on you!

~ Try a
corset to accentuate your bodacious bust and shapely midsection.

~ The
mini halter dress will hug your curves and show off your assets.

~ Stick to
thongs and bikini cuts, as boyshorts and high-waisted panties may draw the attention away from your tiny waist, and make you look round and shorten your look.

Work with what you've got, and I guarantee you'll feel sexy!

Women's History Month Profile - Mary Phelps Jacob

Since March is Women's History Month, I thought I would learn more about the woman who brought brassieres into being. Mary Phelps Jacob (self-nicknamed "Polly") was a young New York socialite and descendant of Governor Bradford, the first governor of the Plymouth Colony.

In 1910 Polly wore a sheer evening gown to a social event, but the whalebone from the corset poked out underneath the sheer fabric. So she and her maid stitched two silk handkerchiefs together with some pink ribbon and cord.

The garment was current with the styles of the time, and soon many people were flocking to her to request brassieres of their own. After realizing how popular her garment had become, Polly patented it under the name "Brassiere", derived from the French word for "upper arm". However, business ownership did not appeal to her, and she sold the patent to the Warner Brothers Corset Company in Bridgeport, Connecticut for $1,500.

Polly was one of the many women who was revolutionary in her time and who made a mark on history. Brassieres have come a long way, but we have Polly to thank for the birth of the garment.

To celebrate Polly's mark on history, why not buy one of Lingerie Diva's lovely bra sets? Now bras are not only functional, but beautiful and meant to be seen!

Celebrate Women's History Month!

Lingerie and Women in Society
It’s hard to believe that women used to have to dress like this. Throughout history women’s underwear has followed women’s long battle for freedom and social equality.

Perhaps the most influential form of women’s underwear has been the corset. This painful contraption, sometimes made of wood or iron, kept women immobilized for centuries. It made even the simplest tasks, such as breathing and sitting, nearly impossible. This contributed to the conception of women as “delicate flowers” prone to fainting.
Corsets were seen as a metaphor for virtue, as well as a necessity for the fashions of the day. The derogatory English term “loose woman” stems from the view of loosely corseted or corset-less women as being sexually promiscuous and unkempt.

By WWI women began rejecting corsets, as they interfered with their ability to perform the new jobs they found themselves doing as the men left for war. A new image of women as a capable, independent sex emerged. Women began flattening their curves (chest and hips) with another kind of corset, and demanded more comfortable underwear to participate in sports and exercise. The first bra was invented by an American woman, Mary Phelps Jacobs, in 1914. (Come back Thursday to read more about Mary.)

In the 1930s the value of the feminine virtues of childbearing and housekeeping resurfaced, leading to the ideal of a well-proportioned body with slimmer hips. Thus, bust-emphasizing brassieres, suspender belts and corset became popular.

During WWII women often knitted their own underwear as funds were scarce. After the war, women reverted to the very feminine styles influenced by the Victorian period, wearing full skirts, corsets and lifting bras.

In the 1960s tights were invented. Brassieres lost popularity as women all over the world saw them as symbols of women’s suppression. The old brassieres were replaced by lighter underwear and fun colors to try to win back women shoppers.

Nowadays corsets are fashionable again, and they no longer symbolize the suppression of women, but rather the beauty and power that the sex possesses. Check out some of Lingerie Diva's corsets! Lingerie comes in all sorts of fun and flirty colors, fabrics and styles. Now women (and their significant others) have fun picking out lingerie. Thanks for celebrating Women's History Month with us at Lingerie Diva!

History of Men’s Underwear

It started out with the loincloth. Or as George in the George of the Jungle movie says, “butt flaps.” Which weren’t so great in windy and cold climates . . .

Since supplies of underwear were buried in the tombs of the Egyptians pharaohs, we know they’ve been around for a while. One site said that King Tut was buried with 145 pairs!

The ancient Romans wore a kind of undergarment called a subligaculum. It was like a pair of shorts.

Pull-on underpants called braies were invented around the 13th century. Braies were large baggy drawers, tied or laced around the waist and at midleg.

Drawers continued in various forms until the Industrial Revolution, where the union suit with its drop down back flap became popular.

In the 1930s briefs and boxers got popular. About that time elastic waists replaced button, snap, and tie closures. The diagonal vent was add to boxers and briefs in 1934.

In World War 2 long skin-tight underpants called Long Johns were made for the soldiers.

In the 1960s boxer shorts began to be decorated and bikini underwear was introduced using animal prints. About that time elastic fabrics began to be used for more comfort and support.

Designer underwear became a big deal in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

Nowadays you can buy about anything to cover or not cover the bottom, including some interesting men's items on Lingerie Diva.

Actually, we’re adding new products here, too. Some that are even very comfortable . . .
