No, I’m not talking about going to Starbucks the morning after a one-night stand. I’m talking about the California coffee shops that — dare I say it? — may actually give Starbucks something to worry about. In Orange County’s Little Saigon, Vietnamese American cafes have become quite popular, particularly for their lingerie-clad, high-heel-wearing waitresses.
Vietnamese are known for their love of coffee, but they also tend to be very conservative. However, these baristas, decked out in corsets, bustiers and camisoles, are not afraid to show a little skin. And it seems to be paying off.
Two of the original lingerie coffee shops — Café Lu and Café Di Vang 2 — have been around for more than five years now, and the concept has spread to other Little Saigon areas across the nation. Although the shops only sell coffee, smoothies and teas (not even light snacks), the shops give customers a little extra something that other coffee shops don’t have. Dubbed “the new Hooters” these coffee shops have potential to be big. Starbucks big! Let’s just hope they don’t get mass-produced with gaudy, orange owls. Or we’ll all be worse off.
