Merkins are the new “it” trend in intimate wear. Although they’re just starting to go mainstream, these pubic wigs are not a new accessory. The first merkin dates back to 1450. Women would wear them so they could shave their pubic hair to prevent pubic lice, and prostitutes would wear them to cover up STDs. Luckily for us, they’ve become a lot more fashion forward. In fact, fashion designers have started incorporating them into their collections, like this piece from the Alexandre Herchcovitch Spring 2009 collection (pictured left).
Merkins are also gaining popularity in Hollywood. Merkins allow actors and actresses to stay within the nudity clauses of various TV shows and movies. They prevent overexposure of the genitalia and keep films from receiving a too restrictive MPAA rating. For example, Kate Winslet wore one in The Reader.
Of course, many people just use merkins for decoration, like this pink, Sesame-Street inspired one by Playazon. Whether or not you think your parts are worthy of a merkin, let your pubes shine this season because they’ve become a hot commodity, worthy of showing off.
