Barbie - An American Fashion Icon

There are some women who are so fabulously styled that they’ve become fashion icons. Their looks are photographed, discussed and copied at length – everyone wants to know what and who they’re wearing and how they can get the same look. When I think of fashion icons, several names pop into mind. Marilyn Monroe. Elizabeth Taylor. Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Audrey Hepburn. Barbie.

Yes, I said Barbie, as in the plastic doll made by Mattel. Over the decades Barbie has been outfitted by a range of designers that includes Bob Mackie, Christian Louboutin, and Vera Wang, just to name a few. She’s trendy and yet classic at the same time. Her closet – filled with evening gowns, party dresses and pink high heels – is the envy of many.

Today I’ve pulled together a collection of pieces that are “typical” Barbie style – that is, glamorous, very girly (lots of lace and ruffles) and everything in pink.

Check out more of my Barbie-inspired photo album on Flickr. And if you’re based in Kansas City – like Lingerie Diva is – don’t forget to check out the Barbie exhibit at the Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City, running through July 4!
